Split lockwashers, also called "helical" lockwashers, have a split in the center with turned up ends that act as teeth when the fastener is tightened and bite into the mating material stopping the fastener from turning. Grade 8.8 split lockwashers are made from quenched and tempered medium carbon steel and are comparable to imperial Grade 5.
